What do a travelling spa, custom craft carts, blackjack, sweet snacks, themed movie days and hallway parades have in common? They’re all happening at DeBary Health and Rehabilitation Center—just for fun! Our life enrichment team has been hard at work (and play) developing exciting activities to keep our residents social and happy while their families are unable to join us inside the center.
Though COVID-19 has changed our daily routines, it’s also given us a fresh perspective and helped us find better ways to connect one-on-one with our residents.
Spreading love with a bit of pampering, crafting and sharing
It’s easy to feel lonely and isolated, especially during these trying times. As a result of the pandemic, we’ve replaced all group gatherings with daily one-on-one visits with our residents. Throughout the day, our team provides aromatherapy, lotion therapy, manicures or pedicures to our residents while sitting, chatting, coloring, knitting, reading or singing with them. Many of our residents have also enjoyed crafting together, making things like sun catchers, greeting cards, bird feeders and decorative river stones. Resident response to these personalized interactions has been overwhelmingly positive, and we love seeing their faces light up when we stop by for a visit.
Our residents love being active in their community, too. They have made dozens of knitted hats for cancer patients and NICU babies, planted seeds in our garden, and registered to vote in this year’s historic election.
Keeping families connected
Our residents love visitors, and we understand how important it is for families to stay connected. We’re helping our residents see beloved family members safely through FaceTime and scheduled window visits. The lingering fingerprints on our welcome window tell a beautiful story of how much love there is for our residents just on the other side of the glass.
It’s heartwarming to watch families show their love through messages, balloons and songs. Though hugs and kisses will have to wait, giving our residents and their families the opportunity to see each other in-person has been a blessing.
We believe you’re never too old to have fun. That’s why we’re dedicated to offering comprehensive programs to enrich the emotional, social, spiritual, physical and educational dimensions of wellness for everyone in our care.
